Im Goung Yun

Background:
Dr. Yun graduated from Seoul National University, College
of Medicine, in 1962. He then joined the Korean Air Force
as a medical officer and served three years. In 1965 he became
a faculty member of Catholic Medical College in Seoul, Korea,
for 33 years, first as a lecturer and then he went on to become
a professor in preventive medicine and pioneered the industrial
health in Korea.
Professional
Experience:
Dr. Yun dedicated his life to the control of pneumoconiosis
in Korea, in particular, treatment and compensation of pneumoconiosis
patients. At present, he continues to contribute to the care
of pneumoconiosis patients as Director of one rural hospital
specializing in dealing with pneumoconiosis. He is respected
as the pioneer of pneumoconiosis in Korea. As you may be aware,
until 1970, Korea depended mainly on coal as their principal
energy source and this resulted in bringing about an increasing
number of pneumoconiosis patients. There are about 50,000
confirmed and potential pneumoconiosis patients in Korea.
Career
Highlights:
Dr. Yun published numerous research papers and volumes of
books. Dr. Yun currently serves as President of the Korean
Industrial Health Association with 650 staff members and over
half a million members. This Association undertakes activities
on health protection and promotion of workers health through
screening of small-scale industry workers, measurements and
improvements of environment. He also serves as chairman of
the health screening assessment committee of the Ministry
of Labor as well as chairman of industrial health standardization
committee.
