Background:
Ernest Mastromatteo, M.D. was born December 16, 1923, in Toronto,
Ontario, Canada. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree
from the University of Toronto in Toronto, Canada; his Diploma
of Public Health from the University of Toronto in 1949, and
his Diploma of Industrial Health in 1953.
Professional
Experience:
From 1976-1985, Dr. Mastromatteo served as the director of
Occupational Health, Inco Limited. From 1974-76, he was chief
of the Occupational Safety and Health Branch, International
Labour Organization, Geneva, Switzerland. He served as director
and other assignments with the Occupational Health Protection
Branch, Ontario Ministry of Health from 1952-74. From 1949-52,
he was the medical director of the Virden Health Unit, Virden,
Manitoba.
Career
Highlights:
Dr. Mastromatteo retired in 1985. During his career, his involvement
in occupational health and safety extended far beyond the
routine. He made an important contribution to the literature
in the field, covering a wide variety of subjects, from technical,
policy, educational and philosophical aspects, as well as
being actively involved in improving the health and safety
of workers through his association with international associations,
government, and industry. He served on numerous boards, committees,
and councils, including: trustee and board member, American
Board of Preventive Medicine; consultant, World Health Organization
and the International Labour Organization; member, Advisory
Council on Occupational Health and Occupational Safety; and
chairman, Applied Research Awards committee, Ontario Provincial
Lottery. Dr. Mastromatteo is certified as specialist in Occupational
Medicine. He served as a consultant for a number of agencies
and organizations, and as a lecturer, professor, and head
of the Department of Environmental Health in the School of
Hygiene at the University of Toronto (1972-74). Dr. Mastromatteo
wrote and spoke extensively and had more than 36 articles
published in professional journals.
