Background:
John V. Grimaldi, Ph.D., was born September 6, 1916, in New
York, New York, USA. He received his Doctor of Philosophy
degree from New York University in 1955, his Master of Arts
degree from New York University in 1941, his Bachelor of Chemical
Engineering degree from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn
in 1951, and a Bachelor of Science degree from New York University
in 1939.
Professional
Experience:
Dr. Grimaldi was a practicing engineer and consultant to management
in the specialty he initiated in 1956, safety management.
From 1977-86, he served as executive director and professor
of safety science and systems management at the Institute
of Safety and Systems Management, University of Southern California.
From 1979-86, he served as clinical professor of community
and environmental medicine at the University of California,
Irvine, College of Medicine. He was director of The Center
for Safety, and chairman of the Department of Safety Sciences
and Education at New York University from 1967-77. He served
as consultant for health, safety and plant protection with
General Electric Company at its New York corporate headquarters
from 1956-67. Prior to that position, he had served as director
of the Engineering and Research Division as assistant manager
of the Accident Prevention Department of the Association of
Casualty and Surety Companies in New York from 1945-56. From
1944-45, he served as research associate at the Center for
Safety, New York University. From 1942-44, he served as director
of safety for Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, Bethpage,
New York.
Career
Highlights:
Dr. Grimaldi was a pioneer in safety for the handicapped worker.
He developed one of the first usable research reports on employment
and safety of the physically handicapped, and was appointed
to the first national Presidential Committee on Employment
of the Physically Handicapped. He led the development of the
first graduate-level academic training program in occupational
safety and health and occupational biomechanics at New York
University. Dr. Grimaldi was a pioneer in early efforts to
combine emerging management techniques with occupational safety
and health programs. He was primary author, with Rollin Simonds,
of Safety Management, Accident Cost and Control, a leading
college text for three decades. Since the text's publication,
"safety management" became the popular title for
the work of safety practitioners generally. He was a prolific
and articulate writer and highly regarded in research circles.
